Animal of the week

Image
Not the biggest tarantula I have seen this week, but it was walking up the stairs towards our apartment. They get bigger than my hand!! Sorry about the poor quality of the photo, I was not to comfortable about my hand being so close!! It is a Brazilian salmon pink tarantula for those of you who are interested.

Something I haven't posted about much is the birds of prey and vultures, this is due to the fact they are so hard to photograph

This is the old shell of a cicada. These insects are responsible for most of the noise that comes from the jungle.

A night on the streets

Yesterday was Wednesday which means we were heading off to down town Recife to spend a few hours with the guys who sleep rough out on the streets. For a while now everyone has been gathering in one particular square, but we knew this wouldn't last as when too many people gather the police disperse then. We arrived, and that time had come, we usually find 25-30 people of all different ages gathered in the square, with their dogs, cardboard and bottles of glue, but everyone had been moved on. Fortunately they had only moved about 200 meters down one of the side roads, so it didn't take us long to find them.  This new place stinks!! rotten food, human excrement, not nice! But we quickly connected with the group starting to paint nails, doing first aid and playing dominoes. Anderson was there, he is 3 and he had clothes on!! which is brilliant as I haven't seen him in clothes for months. Sadly it’s not a safe place for a small child to be naked. We struck up a conversat

fruit

This fruit is a bit like lychee, but a bit smaller. It is a welcome shack as you walk up the hill.
